ARTICLES:SurveyorsSurveying is the art or science of making specific measurements to establish or determine the position of points beneath, on, or above the earth's surface. Surveyors complete this task in different classes based on what type of data is obtained, the instruments or methods used, and what purpose the surveying will serve. Some types of surveying include: land surveys, engineering surveys, geologic surveys, wetland and soil surveys, photogrammetric or aerial surveys, topographic surveys, and geodetic surveys. One of the most common jobs that surveyors encounter has to do with the sale or purchase of commercial lands, residential areas, or buildings. They conduct mortgage inspections and surveys in order to satisfy the requirements of mortgage lenders or banks for real estate properties. Generally speaking, this type of survey is for the purpose of confirming that buildings or land boundaries are exactly as designated on the paperwork. Inspection results are reported at the time of closing, but rarely called upon for legal purposes. If the job is done properly, surveyors can often find discrepancies between parcel boundaries marked on the ground and deed descriptions, a problem that would have gone unnoticed otherwise. Surveyors are individuals who have the ability to use math as a way of visualizing objects, measuring distances, sizes, or other abstract forms. They work with accuracy and precision, since even the smallest mistake can be very expensive. The process of surveying is a team-oriented approach, therefore, surveyors must have strong interpresonal skills as well as have the ability to work as an intregal part of a cooperative team. Entry-level surveyors aquire and learn leadership abilities which are important for supervisory positions. In order to become a surveyor, there are certain requirements and qualifications which must be met. All applicants to a surveyors educational program must be at least 18 years old. Every applicant must have overall good health and be physically able to complete all phases of the training program. In addition, they must have a valid, current driver's license. This license must stay current for the duration of the apprenticeship.
